Race Report - TNF100 Philipine (DNF Version)



* cerpen yang panjang.. xpyh baca kalau menyampah..

2 minggu yang amat sibuk. Aku berada di 4 buah negara dalam 2 minggu ni.  4 days in Singapore back and 4 days in Malaysia then 4 days in Philipine and sambung lagi 4 days in Vietnam. So report ni aku tulis in 1st day aku kat Vietnam which dengan mood masih xsampai sebab penat balik dari Pinoy pon xhabis lagi. So i am in the meeting, boring.. ngantuk dan yup menulis la. 

Intro
Game ni xda dalam list aku tahun ni. Actually plan asal nak enroll Beaufort Ultra in June and Starlight Ultra in May. But aku hold sebab ada few project happen during this time in the office. So around Feb, nak jadi lagi best, bro Gaz pulak PM aku tanya nak join dia ke for this game. Sbb dia xda kaki. So lps aku berkira2 ngan Suzi and dgn timeline yg ada aku yakin can train and lari game ni. So bye2 to Beafort and Starlight. So kmi pon ping sapa2 lagi yg berminat nak join trip ni so we can share the logistic. Luckly abe Yim xkeberatan untuk membantu. So aku, bro Gaz, Mun Ngai and Fath will attached together in this trip and abe Yim will help to host it. 
Team Malaysia in the same hotel..
Close to the game, aku jadi amat busy dgn hal office and KOBL. So kecuakan pon muncul sebab TNF100 Pinoy mempunyai reputasi dia sendiri. It the toughest TNF series so far in the region. Training mmg in place but the only things is not solid. So a month before the game aku PM organizer untuk downgrade the game from 100KM to 50KM. Dung, xdpt downgrade. At this point aku berserah. Aku inform Suzi, with current fitness 50KM should not be any issue but to handle St Tomas (sama tinggi dgn Mt Tahan) where from 200 to 2200 elevation in 7 hours and it 21KM should be hell. 

I beliave Suzi amat risau but she keep make poker face and ask me to calm down. Seriusly aku agak cuak compare dgn game2 lain sebelum ni and she know it. Maybe sebab aku mai sorang2 kot. Sebelum ni ada bini ikut. The feeling is different.


Day 1
Aku bergerak ke Manila dgn geng2 superhuman, abe Yim, Mun Ngai, bro Gaz and Fath. Wakil Pacat Zinov   mai pagi tu tuk send kami ke perbatasan. Bergerak dgn Cebu Air 2 hari sebelum game. LCCT pulak dah sampai penghujung nyawa, so pagi tu kami bergerak xda la semak sgt. We reach Manila at 5PM and hari dah terang. We direct make a move to Pasay bus terminal to get the bus to Baguio. Kne amek taxi to this bus terminal. Manila agak busy walau pon seawal 6am and in public holiday. At Pasay, bus pulak takda. Only lps tengahhari ada bus ke Baguio. Actually ada 2 jenis bus ke Baguio. Satu jenis A class which ada big sit, ada makan and lbh selesa. Sold out. Satu lagi jenis B class which ada aircond and mcm express bus biasa. Lesson learn for this process, actually ticket bas dpa ni boleh beli online. So for any pinoy game, dah boleh and plan awal2 on this. 
Manager mai hantar players..
 So xda choice kami kene tunggu sampai tghhari. We decide tuk lepak kat Joliebie (JB). Take a breakfast and melepak. Best part we occupied 3rd floor and xda org nak naik and lepak dkt atas. Staff JB pon sporting, dpa block tangga so xda org naik atas. So layan blues la ramai2. Tdo kejap dan makan.. makan dan makan. At 12pm we when back to bus terminal and make a move to Baguio. Bus ni berhenti 2 kali for food and toilet break. Jalan pulak, haram. Mcm ular kne palu. Aku nak muntah few times + bila naik mkin tinggi aku dpt rasa xlesa dekat dada. I just take it easy and sedapkan hati maybe tired or AMS. 


Kami sampai Baguio dah gelap. Abe Yim terus pi bus terminal and beli tiket balik. Just to elimenet any issue la masa balik sebab xleh nak agak keadaan kat sini. Takut pulak lak xda bas nak balik. Kekangan kami is flight balik sbb kami akan balik on Sunday. Same date when the game finish. So dengan 7 jam perjalanan bas dari Baguio ke Manila. It really2 risky. So time management kne betul. Cuaca agak sejuk dan i am still in blues. We make a move to hotel which is only a walking distance. Agak best sebab dorm kami ni dekat ngan SM Mall, biggest mall yg ada dkt Baguio.  


Day 2
Hari kedua, we just relax and enjoy the food. Petang kami bergerak ke Summer Hotel to get our bip. Drama happen here. Bip kne amek dkt starting line and not at the breafing area. Drop beg is at briefing area. No notice or what so ever. Aku dgr it not the 1st time. Last year pon mcm ni jugak. So no choice kmi kne bergerak ke starting line. It about 30 minutes sebab jalan jam giler kat Baguio. 

Sampai starting line, drama continue. Xtau mana counter, xda sign or what just ramai org melepak. So lps tanya2, baru jumpa. Drama lagi, bip Mun pulak xda dalam list, katanya dkt Summer Hotel. So a bit weird sbb he and abe Yim go by walk in. Then event t pulak size smua kelam kabut. It already stated during registration but masa RPC all not in place. So timbul rasa xselesa in our group on all this drama. So we just make a move to Summer Hotel again tuk drop beg and race briefing.

Ngadap jam lagi. Sampai2 hotel tu penuh melimpah ruah. Not sure why so much ppl sbb setau aku xramai yg enroll except for 22KM. Kmi drop je barang terus lpk kat luar. Then make a move to SM Mall to buy keperluan tuk esok. But the case happen during RPC terus jadi perbualan kami. 


Day 3
Start - AS1 (8.4KM)
At 1am smua dah bangun. Siap2 and prepare to starting line. Aku sendiri agak xsedap badan. Malam sebelum tu aku telan panadol sbb sakit kepala and rasa xselesa dkt dada. But i just free my mind and plan to tackle base on Aid Station (AS). Plan asal nak move skali ngan bro gaz. So sng kalau apa2. Sharp 3am 100KM dilepaskan. Aku just start slow. Pagi tu sejuk sampai ke tulang so aku aspect akan face issue at least at 1st 5KM. Masa ni aku dalam tgh2 group lagi but aku stop byk kali. Keting aku terbakar lagi. Penyakit keturunan ni.

At this point aku suh bro gaz make a move 1st. Aku yakin aku akan bergerak perlahan sampai badan aku betul2 panas. So i just go with very2 slow pace. At one level aku berada at the last line in the crowd which ada ambulan kat belakang aku. But i just keep calm and do a lot of streching tuk hilangkan sakit dekat keting. So after an hour baru badan sedap. Masa ni aku dah start catch up the rest of the crowd. Masa ni 50KM runner dah mai. So masa elit 50KM lalu aku ikut kat blakang dpa so aku manage to catch bro gaz near to AS1. 

AS1 - AS2 (9.9KM, 18.3KM)
Xlama kami kat AS1 terus make a move. Air xluak lagi. So we start masuk denai dan hutan2 sekunder. Masa ni kmi sesat about 10 minutes bila ikut satu big group. We make a turn lps 500 meter sbb dah start xda marker. Aku rasa silap aku jugak la ikut2 org. Aku xface any big issue kat sini. Aku still keep moving dgn bro gaz kat sini. All the way lalu kawasan kampung org, ladang, kawasan army training. 


Aku just enjoy the view and keep monitor the pace. Simple plan sbnarnya. Just keep moving between 4-5KM/hour so aku akan ada balance at least 1-2 hours before each cutoff. Cutoff happen at AS3 = 11AM, AS6 = 5PM, AS9 = 1AM dan finishing = 9AM. So aku manage to past a lot of other runners. Masa ni elevation around 800 - 1000 meter and still diatas paras scale gunung. 

Aku reach AS2 dgn baki around 2jam on targeted time. Masa ni bro gaz dah start laju so kejap ja aku jumpa dia kat sini. Aku just ask him to move and xpyh tunggu aku. So aku benti layan refuel sekajap dgn air dan ubi manis kat sini. Kaki and badan still sedap lagi.

AS2 - AS3 (11.3KM, 29.6KM)
Aku make a move after 5 minutes. Masa ni area ni agak byk anjing so aku kne relax. Apa yg aku belajar, anjing ni kalu kita buat bodo, dia pon buat bodoh gak. Klu kita dgr MP3 player dia akan start menyalak or kalu kita berlari. So disebabkan dpa ni peka dan telinga kuali, so tiap kli lalu kawasan ada anjing aku akan offkan mp3 player aku dan cuba untuk berlari2 anak2 ja.

Aku dpt problem dkt sini. This really screw up all my plan. Masa ni pendakian dah bermula balik. Actually aku just take it easy je. Enjoy the view. But aku perasan, lagi tinggi aku naik, kepala aku jadi sakit dan rasa susah bernafas. So aku xleh laju, aku recall balik feeling ni masa naik kinabalu. Sebenarnya pelik jugak sbb aku boleh handle kinabalu event elevation pon naik slow ja between this strech. 

Rahsia terbongkar.. sotong sumbat untuk kekal muda..

So aku berhenti byk kali disebabkan pening dan sakit dada. Berdebar dan aku rasa mcm susah nak bernafas. Masa masuk hutan salem high country aku dah total xleh laju. Aku berhenti byk kali. Masa ni dalam hati, done.. i am fuck. Kepala ligat pikir on how should i handle this. Mood still at par but body condition mmg fuckup. Masa ni ramai start potong aku. Even some friend like jo and sam (aku knal dpa masa Beaufort Ultra) berhenti and bantu aku. Kasi ORS, kasi fresh oren, kasi semangat. Aku start makan .. makan and makan. Just to make my energy at par but body condition masih xok. 

At one point aku muntah, habis keluar apa aku makan. So at this moment aku fikir nak DNF. Maybe just make it to AS3 and DNF. Masa ni mind aku dah down giler2. But aku still have plenty of time. So walau pon badan and mind dah kelaut kaki aku masih bergerak. So masa nak sampai AS3 keadaan aku makin teruk. Xleh bernapas. Rasa sesak dada. 


Masa sampai aku terus baring dalam ambulan. Aku ckp dada aku sakit. Mamat medic tu cuak. So dia tanya nak oksigen x? Nak DNF x? Tpi xda pulak dia cek aku. So aku kuar dari ambulan and cakap xpa. Bagi aku relax kejap. So aku lepak kat tend, bukak smua yg aku bawak and aku sandar. Tarik napas.. lepasssssss.. tarik napas .. lepassssss. So aku refuel.. aku tgk xda solid food disediakan. Just air kosong. So aku just makan ration yg aku bawak.

Aku sampai 1 hour seblum cutoff time. Elevation around 1400. Dan dah masuk 30KM. So aku dah bergerak 7jam for 30KM. Dengan dada sakit. Xda solid food. Cuaca panas. Kepala sakit. DNF mmg dkt dalam kepala aku masa ni. Aku ada 24KM lagi dgn max elevation dalam 1800 dan cutoff dalam 5jam lagi. Lps 10 minit aku firm my decision to confinue. Nak wat drama kat 30KM wat apa. So i just keep moving, mana aku leh lari aku lari.  

AS3 - AS4 (11.8KM, 41.4KM)
So aku bergerak dgn few pinoy runner along this strech. AKu rasa view dalam strech ni paling cantik. Area ni xda pokok, kawasan terbukak at some place until masuk ke mossy forest. Masa ni sesak napas aku akan jadi bila climb. Kalau turun still ok. So masa naik aku just go slow but go a bit fast masa turun. 

Aku stop few times kat bawah pokok sbb terlalu panas. Group aku masa ni keep encourage each other to move. Kat area ni aku agak pelik sbb byk giler lembu. So maybe it their nature to be dkt tanah tinggi kot. After kawasan gunung, masuk pulak mossy forest. Masa ni aku pi agak laju sbb downhill. At this area agak skit technical. Ada main tali and some technical downhill. 

Kecoh kejap sbb bip Mun xda

Aku jumpa few other group kat sini which dpa melepek kat celah2 pokok. Maybe to tired. Masa ni perut aku start buat hal. Maybe sebab xda solid food. So aku just refuel dgn makanan ringan yg aku bawak + coke. So aku reach AS4. Few KM dari AS4, aku dah decide tuk DNF. Masa tu dada aku mencucuk2. Dgn lapar giler. Dgn panas paing. Masa sampi sini aku masih ada byk masa lagi. So sampai2 je, aku sms suzi kata aku akan DNF at AS4 and aku akan update perkembangan aku.

Sampai sini dpa cek aku and kata heart rate aku tinggi. Muka aku pucat dan kencing aku kuning (dpa ask aku kencing and report the color). So dpa kata aku ada symptom dehydrate + AMS + gastric. So dpa mtk aku xteruskan game. So selari dgn decision aku nak DNF so aku call it off. Masa ni dpa kasi aku roti, air dan treatment. Actually ramai DNF kat sini. Aku mtk dpa hantar aku pi AS5 so aku boleh amek barang aku and balik. Dpa suh aku tunggu. So tunggu dalam sejam aku tgk xda apa2 update so aku tanya lagi. Dpa kata dpa kne tunggu last runner which ada dalam 34 orang lagi kat belakang. 


WTF, mau kol 10 malam jugak baru kuar dari sini. So lepas aku kira2, baik aku make a move to AS5 by foot. Aku tgk kalu aku laju aku akan sampai around 5PM. So it ngam2 cutoff time. Aku propose few guy kat situ dan dpa agree to make a move to AS5. So 4 org cancel tuk DNF and we make a move. Lps dpt solid food, aku rasa energy dah naik balik. Masa ni dada still sakit, kepala masih pening tapi gastrik dah xda. Pedih perut hilang and maybe sbb solid food. So we make a move.

AS4 - AS5 (12.5KM, 53.9KM)
Jalan ni all the way down but never ending. Lagi satu at some place cerun dia agak tajam walau pon jalan raya. So kereta pon xleh nak lalu except pickup. So aku lari at some place just to chase a time. Masa ni 3 org yg ikut aku aku tinggalkan sebab dpa makan angin plak turun gunung. Masa ni aku sms suzi kata aku akan continue ke AS5. Dia duk bebel kata takut apa2 hal sbb sesak napas yg aku dpat sblum ni.


Xnak pening aku just sms yg sedap2 je kat dia supaya dia xrisau sgt. So aku keep moving. Nak jadi hal, hujan ribut plak turun lepas tu. Siap ngan kilat dgn guruh. So it slow down my move. Aku byk berdoa kat sini supaya aku dpt kuar dgn selamat. Satu sebab kilat, memancor mancor. Mmg seriau sbb aku lari kat open space. 2nd sbb jalan dia licik, jalan balak. Banyak kali aku jatuh. 3rd, air yg turun dah mcm air terjun. Aku face this before at TMBT. But here lain, hujan dia satu macam sejuk.

Aku reach AS5 around 6PM. Lebih 1 hour dari cutofftime. Masa ni dah mula gelap. Aku sampai aku tgk xda runners kat situ. So aku amek barang aku and siap2. Aku ckp kat dpa aku DNF. Masa nak siap2 bersalin aku dgr suara kecoh2. Rupanya si Nik, dia pon DNF kat situ. So dia kasi tau ramai lagi kat the other side. Rupanya ramai lagi kat situ including bro gaz. So kecoh kejap la.


Post Game
Aku xface any issue on my leg and body. Smua dalam keadaan baik lps aku reach AS5. Walaupon dah bergerak in 15 hours. Dgn distance 54KM dan total elevation gain dkt 3000. Cuma dada aku masih sakit dan gastrik aku datang balik masa dkt AS5. Actually klu xda smua issue yg xdiduga ni aku yakin at least boleh ada kat peak on St Tomas. But aku admit, things happen for a reason.


So ada byk pro and cons berlaku antaranya

Pro
1. View and scenary dia amat cantik. Elevation dia pon mmg berbaloi2.
2. Volunteer yg ada sepanjang track amat membantu. 

Cons
1. Aku rasa organizer kne lebih meletakkan perkara basic in place antaranya
- RPC and race breifing boleh dibuat kat satu tmpt ja. Jadi masalah pada org luar sbb kne kehulu kehilir. 
- Kne letak dalam term kata it semi support and only have air kosong ja at each AS so runner boleh prepare solid food yg perlu. Aku xpasti how last year runner review say ada byk mende makan. Aku nampak ada la pisang salai and ubi manis but not sure that will really help. 
- DNF procedure. Aku stuck dkt AS5 sampai jam 1am. Bayang la, dgn sejuk sbb ribut still happen that time. Dpa prefer hantar barang dpa dari participant. Aku dah nak panggil taxi dah masa ni but dpa sendiri xda number2 ni smua.

2. Volunteer at some AS agak tidak friendly dan xtau apa dpa nak kne buat. AKu xaspect byk enough dgn info basic yg kita nak tau dpa boleh jawab. Such apa ada kat AS tu, cutoff time etc. 

3. Masa sampai bilik, Fath bgtau aku ramai pinoy yg dpt drop category dpa dari 100KM ke 50KM. It shows at the bip and only pinoy runner. So aku xpasti la how this things happen. Sbb aku sendiri nak drop dpa xkasi. Lagi pon aku bukan nak sgt medal and T yg ada pon. Futher event fee for both category sama. 


Outro
So Suzi tanya aku nak mai lagi x.. aku kata yup aku akan datang lagi but bukan dalam masa terdkt. Conclusion pada problem aku adalah AMS + dehydrate + gastrik. Yup it a new things dan aku kne learn more about this. Dgn ilmu insyallah we know how to handle it. 

Anyway, 4 org yg aku kenal dan dalam satu trip habiskan game ni which is Abe Yim (backtoback which UTMF a week before), Mun Ngai (100KM), Zul (100KM) dan Fath (50KM). Tahniah dan anda semua rockkkkk...

Macam menyampah la...tapi best hehe.

Congrats Arman to have the ball to tackle this one of the toughest 100km Ultra trail in Asia, other peeps would give excuses but not you. Experience will make you wise.

Now that you know about AMS, the importance of proper nutricient during the race - 70% of food intake (fuel) needed to be consume during the race. If you don't eat enough or hydrate enough the body will shutdown and naturally you won't finish the race.

Wise decision to stop the race at 50km, it only get tougher toward Mt Santo Tomas. There will be other races but this experience from TNF Philipines is the most valuable lesson to take with you (my TNF Ph 2013 experience help me a lot during the UTMF race).

Now you need to find solutions for AMS, proper nutricient etc for the next race. We always learned something new everyday, that's why i love trail running, it teaches us to respect to fellow runners, nature and mountains.
